Our super shrimps are fit for the Queen

PRINCE Charles personally chose Morecambe Bay Shrimps as one of the main ingredients for the Queen's 80th birthday meal at Kew Palace on Friday. By INGRID KENT

The prince said he selected the seafood delicacy, supplied by Baxter's Potted Shrimps of Morecambe, because he wanted a quintessentially British ingredient for such an auspicious occasion.

And another local company is providing food for the Queen's official birthday celebrations at Balmoral. Waterslack Garden Centre at Silverdale, which is famous for its mouth-watering cakes and delicious meals, has won the contract to cater for the celebrations on June 30.

Friday's celebratory meal, hosted by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, was held at the newly restored Kew Palace in London.

The shrimps were also savoured by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William and Prince Harry, The Duke of York with Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, The Earl and Countess of Wessex and a host of other royals.

Prince Charles worked on the menu with his personal chef to come up with the 'Morecambe Bay Brown Shrimp Mayonnaise and Fine Herbs' which was part of the meal's 'starter'.

Quality

A spokesperson for Clarence House told The Visitor: "He chose mainly English ingredients as he is a great supporter of British produce. He said he appreciated the quality of Morecambe Bay Shrimps."

The full menu was as follows: "Timbale of organic Hebridean smoked salmon, Morecambe Bay brown shrimp mayonnaise and fine herbs, with caper, lemon and parsley dressing.

"Juniper-roast loin of Sandringham Estate venison with port wine sauce, served with steamed young cabbage and spring vegetables.

"Chocolate sponge Birthday cake, coated with a dark chocolate ganache and filled with a Highgrove fruit filling, served with a Highgrove red berry compote."

Bob Baxter, whose company Baxter's Potted Shrimps of Thornton Road in Morecambe supplies shrimps by Royal appointment, told The Visitor he was not allowed to divulge any details.

Waterslack's owner Steve Sowery said he had been approached and asked to do the catering for the official birthday celebrations.

Steve and his company, Palm City Co Ltd which has exclusive contracts to cater for Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Last of the Summer Wine and The Royal, will be catering for up to 15,000 people on the day.
