New M6 link enquiry begins

THE latest round of hearings into the controversial Heysham to M6 link road have begun.
Hearings on alternative options to Lancashire County Council’s preferred ‘northern’ route are taking place today (July 10) and tomorrow (July 11) at Lancaster Town Hall.
The hearings form part of a new public inquiry into the road, which would link junction 34 of the motorway with Heysham.
Highways chiefs revised plans for the road after being told by the Government to save money on the scheme.
The new plans must now be approved by the new National Infrastructure Directorate (NID), formerly the Infrastructure Planning Commission.
There will also be open floor hearings giving supporters and opponents of the road the chance to make their case directly to the public inquiry examiner Peter Robottom.
Two are being held at Lancaster Town Hall at 9.30am on Tuesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 19 and at 2pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday, July 18 at Torrisholme Methodist Church.
The examination by the NID will end in October, after which Mr Robottom will have three months to make a recommendation to the secretary of state for transport, who will then have another three months to make a final decision.
The council hopes to begin construction of the road in summer 2013 and complete the work by late 2015.
TIMETABLE for examination of the Heysham-M6 link road plan - all hearings are at Lancaster Town Hall starting at 9.30am unless specified. Registration to speak opens 30 minutes before the start of the hearings.
