Navy officer volunteers for vital role

A ROYAL Navy sailor is playing a vital role in communications despite serving on dry land and in land locked Afghanistan.

Normally accustomed to rough waters and a sea view, chief petty officer (CPO) Andrew Stewart, from Heysham, is stretching his sea legs and is instead serving on dry land at Kandahar Airfield in South Afghanistan.

He volunteered to go to the country as a communications technician where he is using his vital skills in a multi – national office where he is the only UK sailor.

CPO Stewart joined the Royal Navy at age 18 after he had attended Morecambe High School.

Instead of going to university, he decided to join the Royal Navy in search of challenges and a varied career.

He said: “The Royal Navy offered me fantastic opportunities to travel and several family members have had long and successful careers in the Senior Service and have highly recommended it.”
