Mum's little miracle

A MUM has hailed her daughter 'a miracle' after she survived being hit by a car during her sister's birthday celebrations.

Nine-year-old Courtney Farrington was thrown through the air after being struck as she crossed Heysham Road, Heysham.

She suffered a broken collar bone and broken shoulder blade as well as breaking a bone in her arm.

She also has contusions to her lungs, which are causing severe breathing difficulties.

"We were holding a birthday party," her mum Alex said.

"One minute Courtney was on the trampoline and the next thing I knew, her friend was screaming that she had been run over."

Mum-of-four Alex and her husband Andrew ran to find their daughter in a heap in the middle of the road.

Paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the scene and Courtney was treated for suspected serious spinal injuries before being rushed to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary by road ambulance with a police escort.

"She's only small and she was hit at 30mph and took the full force of the impact to her chest," Alex said.

"She was thrown 20 to 30ft into the air and landed on the other side of the road.

"A nurse at the scene said she wasn't responding to treatment and there wasn't time to wait for the air ambulance to arrive."

Amazingly, Courtney is now recovering at her home in Yewdale Avenue, a quarter of a mile from the accident site.

"She is doing really well now; it's like a miracle," Alex said.

"She's an amazing little girl and I am just so thankful to everyone who helped to save her life."

Courtney had been trying to reach a central reservation in the road when she was struck by the car two weeks ago.

Alex has since spoken to the elderly driver.

"I don't hold him responsible at all," she said. "He didn't have a chance of stopping.

"He was in a state about it and my heart goes out to him."
