MP swaps commons for caravans

MP GERALDINE Smith swapped the Commons for caravans recently when she visited a holiday park near Carnforth.

The Morecambe and Lunesdale member's visit to Bolton Holmes Holiday Park coincided with British Tourism Week which is led by Britain's tourist boards with HRH the Prince of Wales as its patron.

Ms Smith met with Michael Holgate, a director of the Cumbrian family firm which is behind the 4 million project to bring together two existing caravan parks at Bolton le Sands.

When the park opens fully later this year, at least 20 full-time jobs will be created.

The MP heard that Bolton Holmes Holiday Park, covers 140 acres and will provide around 120 privately-owned caravan holiday homes, and about 200 pitches for campers and touring caravans.

In addition to a new restaurant and bar - where local foods will be a speciality - the park will benefit from extensive landscaping work, new roadways, plus a number of conservation initiatives.

Geraldine Smith said: "In areas such as rural Lancashire, tourism plays a vital role in supporting all types of businesses, from shops and pubs to visitor attractions.

"In terms of helping employment, every two caravan holiday homes support one rural job according to Britain's tourist boards.

"For this reason the investment in Bolton Holmes as a prestigious new park development for the area is to be applauded, and I wish the Holgate family every success."
