Morecambe is better place than it was 10 years ago

MORECAMBE is a nicer place than it was 10 years ago, according to the author of a book about the UK’s most decrepit towns.
Sam Jordison has revisited our resort almost a decade after rating it the third worst town in the country in his cult 2003 book Crap Towns.
In an article in the Independent newspaper called “Back to the scene of the grime”, Mr Jordison said Morecambe still had its problems but there are “a few splashes of sunshine”.
He was particularly taken with pop group The Heartbreaks, saying they “point the way to a brighter future”.
Mr Jordison also praised the reopened Midland Hotel and said there were fewer signs of drug use in the West End. But he said the high number of boarded-up shops still make Morecambe “a place where Primark looks positively upmarket”. Mr Jordison interviewed Morecambe town council vice-chairman Darren Clifford and David Morris MP for the article.
He described Mr Morris as “likeable” but questioned the MP’s “sunny optimism” for the town’s future. Mr Jordison also criticised the MP for living in Caton, not Morecambe.
Mr Morris told The Visitor: “I am disappointed that Sam has written such a negative article about Morecambe. I don’t see where I live as being particularly relevant. What is important is that at every opportunity I talk up the constituency.”
