Torch bearers in Morecambe

People taking part in the North Lancashire leg of the Olympic Torch Relay began their adventure at Morecambe Golf Club where they sheltered from the wind and rain before being bussed out to their various starting points.

Tea and welcome bacon butties were on offer as was some encouragement and advice from the golf club’s own Olympian, Roy Walsh, who represented Great Britain at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

Roy, who took part in the high diving and springboard diving events, was only 20 at the time and describes his experience as a ‘dream come true’.

He said: “I didn’t win a medal, but I did win many friends and took part in something that I have never ever forgotten. Blackpool born Roy, came to Morecambe to work at the Super Swimming Stadium as one of the driving team.

Nowadays he is to be found playing regularly at Morecambe Golf Club where he is a popular member of the Rabbits and the Senior Section.
