Morecambe Bay’s £15m tourism boost

A half-million pound boost for Morecambe Bay could be worth £15m for tourism, generate 268 new jobs and safeguard 8,200 more.
The £495,000 from a Government pot to improve seaside resorts will kickstart a project called ‘700 Days to Transform the Bay’, aiming to pull more visitors into our region.
Funding will pay for a new 200km Bay Cycle Route, 300 customer care training places for tourism firms, better marketing and branding for the Bay area, and rejuvenating top heritage attractions such as Heysham Head with new digital trails and apps.
The Morecambe Bay Partnership, a Kendal-based trust devoted to improving the Bay area, co-ordinated the bid and is also behind the ‘700 Days’ scheme.
“We hope this will bring an economic boost to the whole area,” said Susannah Bleakley from Morecambe Bay Partnership.
“The Way of the Roses cycle route has been extremely successful so we want to develop a new family-friendly route combining train and cycling from Walney to Glasson, stopping off at various points in the Lancaster and Morecambe district.
“More visitors visiting the area means people will spend more.
“The money is time-limited, we have just two years to deliver.
“We have more projects in the pipeline and want to make more good things happen, so that Morecambe Bay is recognised as an outstanding natural and cultural heritage site.”
The £23.7m Coastal Communities fund looks to promote economic regeneration and create jobs within seaside resorts.
Twenty coastal regions in the UK, including Scarborough, Hastings and Plymouth, successfully bid for the cash during this round of funding.
