Late Morecambe Shrimp boss appears on TV

Bob Baxter, of James Baxter and Son on Thornton Road, was shown on ITV1's 'Marco's Great British Feast' assisting celebrity TV chef Marco Pierre White in selecting the perfect 'appetiser' for a 'Great British Banquet'.

Mr Baxter, who died on March 8, took Marco behind-the-scenes at Baxter's to where their potted shrimps are prepared, to meet his staff Kathleen, Ann and Olwyn - who were christened 'Baxter's Angels'.

But Bob refused to tell Marco the secret recipe which has made Baxter's shrimps so popular.

Even so, the TV chef decided to use Baxter's shrimps on a short-list of three appetisers for his banquet.

Later on the programme, John and Susan Nelson, Mr Baxter's son and daughter, and Mark Smith, manager at Baxter's, were invited to Marco's Yew Tree Inn in Berkshire to try out the three dishes.

John, Susan and Mark joined other suppliers and top chef Jean-Christophe Novelli in sampling Marco's potted shrimps in butter.

And their verdict? "Too much butter!"

Judging by his sulky reaction, it was a review the sensitive Mr White didn't seem too happy with!

But there are clearly no hard feelings. Mark Smith said later that everyone at Baxter's thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
