Hospital records to be stored off site

Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The original old building.

Patients’ medical records will soon be stored in one secure building away from the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust will be centralising its records offsite in a bid to improve access to electronic records.

Currently, the records are housed in six storage facilities at the RLI.

Concerns had been raised after patients’ notes went missing and hundreds of thousands were not being stored properly.

The Trust said they planned to have 80% of all patients records available electronically within 18 months.

Meanwhile, a war of words is continuing over the future of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary A&E department.

David Morris MP accused the Labour party of ‘scaremongering’ over claims the A&E might close.

Mr Morris hit out during a Parliamentary debate on healthcare in the House of Commons.

“A concerted Labour campaign has been mounted by local party members who actually work in the NHS to make people believe that the A&E is likely to close,” said Mr Morris.

“If the A&E is not under threat, it must be concluded that Labour is frightening people for its own political advantage, which is morally wrong.”

Matthew Hood from Morecambe started the petition calling for no cuts at the RLI.

He said although he welcomed the reassurance from chief executive Jackie Daniel that there were no plans to close A&E, people needed to be careful not to take this as a concrete guarantee.
