Heysham High School will feature on BBC’s The One Show this week after hosting an event aimed at combatting the recent outbreak of measles.

Camera crews visited the Limes Avenue sports college as it hosted a vaccination drive last Wednesday, January 23.

Reporter Louise Minchin was on hand to report on tackling the potentially serious disease after more than 40 cases were confirmed in Morecambe and Heysham earlier this month.

Dr Ken Lamden, consultant in communicable disease control for the Health Protection Authority, who attended the drive, said: “There have been 40 cases of measles in the area since October.

“Measles is a serious disease with 30 per cent of reported cases experiencing one or more complications. Ten to fifteen per cent of children aged between five and 16 are not fully protected and need to look into being vaccinated.

“If you think your child might not be fully vaccinated then check with your GP. They will inform you whether or not your child has had the MMR vaccination and then advise you on what to do.

“We are very encouraged by the number of children who have come and the knowledge that they have about measles.”

The show is due to air on Wednesday, January 30, at 7pm on BBC1.
