Fundraisers halfway to statue target

Venus and Cupid statue in Morecambe

Venus and Cupid statue in Morecambe

A labour of love to save Morecambe’s ‘Venus and Cupid’ sculpture is halfway to its target just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And to celebrate, artist Shane Johnstone will decorate his creation of a mother swinging her child with a lights display on February 14.

This will mark a year since Mr Johnstone announced on Valentine’s Day 2012 he would not demolish the striking artwork.

He had threatened to pull it down after a row with the local councils over site fees after its five-year licence expired in 2010.

But, with Mr Johnstone’s backing, a group of residents set up the Venus and Cupid Arts Trust to raise enough money to keep the sculpture in its current location opposite Morecambe Golf Club.

After a year of fundraising, the trust has raised over £5,000 towards the estimated £10,000 fee to buy the sculpture and secure its future.

“The Venus sculpture is just the first round and after that we want to put on some events in Morecambe,” said Sian Johnson, chair of the trust.

Its first, the Promenade Art Fair, will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27.
