Fire in basement flat

EIGHT people had to be evacuated from a building after a fire broke out in the basement, the fire service said.

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a first floor flat on Westminster Road in Morecambe at 11.17 last night.

They were faced with a severe fire in the basement of the property.

The cause of the fire was subsequently investigated by Fire and Police investigators and found to be suspicious.

Station Manager Mark Hutton said: “If it wasn’t for the good standard of fire precautions in the rented flats and the swift attendance of the three fire crews the outcome of this incident could have been significantly worse.”

Anyone with any information should contact Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
