Father and son rescued from bay
A FATHER and son had to be rescued from a sandbank near the Battery Hotel after becoming trapped by the incoming tide.
Morecambe’s RNLI inshore hovercraft and lifeboat were launched at 8.30pm on Sunday evening after Liverpool Coastguard received 999 calls reporting two people trapped by rising tides.
Morecambe’s Coastguard rescue team and the ambulance service also attended the scene.
The man and his son, with their dog, were up to their waists in water on the sandbank.
They had been attempting to reach a boat which had run aground earlier in the day and quickly became surrounded by the rising waters.
Both the father and son were taken ashore to waiting paramedics and quickly transferred to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with suspected hypothermia.
Michael Guy, Lifeboat operations manager said: “We encourage people to read sea safety notices and take extra care whilst walking on the sands as tides in the Morecambe Bay Area can be dangerous.”
