A cyclist has died in what police believe to be a tragic accident in Lancaster yesterday afternoon.

The man, named as 59-year-old Mervyn Watson, from Lancaster, was cycling down East Road near to Glebe Court at around 5pm when it is thought he came off his bike, resulting in a serious head injury.

He was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary by ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward, but have said that after speaking to witnesses at the scene, they believe there were no other vehicles involved.

Sergeant Steve Wignall from the Road Policing Unit said, “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact the police.

“We have specially trained officers supporting the man’s family during this difficult time and an investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened.”

Anyone with information should contact Lancaster police on 101.
