Crowds come out for cycling stars Wiggins and Cavendish - SLIDESHOW

Waiting for Video...

SOME of the world’s top cyclists paid a visit to the district on Wednesday.

Olympic gold medalist and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky team mate Mark Cavendish were amongst the two-wheeled stars who passed through Kirkby Lonsdale, Hornby, Caton and Quernmore during stage four of the Tour of Britain.

The race had planned to come through the district last year but the stage was cancelled due to high winds.

This time around, what was at times torrential rain didn’t stop sizeable crowds lining the streets to cheer on the riders as they made their way from Carlisle to Blackpool.

For most of the 156km route Carnforth’s Matt Cronshaw, the North West Regional Road Race Champion, was in a lead group of six that at one point had a more than a six-minute lead over the rest of the peloton.

The group were eventually reeled in, allowing Cavendish to sprint to his second stage victory in two days at the finish at Blackpool Tower, meaning the Manx Missile took the leader’s gold jersey from Leigh Howard of Orica - GreenEDGE.

The race finishes in Guildford this Sunday, September 16.
