Bay safety warning after Morecambe ‘whale vomit’ find

Morecambe’s lifeboat station has issued a safety warning following a discovery of rare and valuable ‘whale vomit’.
Ken Wilman was stunned to discover a piece of yellow rock found on the beach by his boxer dog Madge was in fact ambergris, which could be worth up to £100,000.
But the RNLI is warning would-be treasure hunters the bay’s tides can be extremely dangerous.
A statement said: “Whilst the specimen is very rare and worth a lot of money, the chances of finding another are said to be slim.
“Morecambe’s beaches can be very dangerous with fast-rising tides and shifting quicksand on a day-to-day basis.
“People can be caught out very easily and when searching for items can lead to confusion about tides and areas of danger.”
Mike Guy, Morecambe’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: “We advise the public to read the sea safety notices placed around Morecambe or contact the HM Coastguard for further safety information.”
The sperm whale sick, nicknamed ‘floating gold’, is used as a perfume ingredient because of its unique scent.
