Alternative route debated as new link road inquiry begins

The inquiry consists of a series of hearings into the road, which would link junction 34 of the motorway with Heysham.
Plans for the road were revised after the Government was told by Lancashire County Council was told to reduce the cost, but the new scheme must now be approved by the National Infrastructure Directorate.
The inquiry began on Monday with a site visit. A two day hearing about alternatives to the road then began at Lancaster Town Hall on Tuesday.
Warton resident Mike Dickinson spoke in favour of his alternative route, the Lancaster Bypass Link (LBL), which is backed by Morecambe Town Council. The town council was represented by Coun Linda Davies and clerk David Croxall.
The LBL would follow a slightly different course from the western route previously ruled out, beginning at a new junction 33a close to Lancaster University.
It would cross Ashton Road north of Stodday, passing west of Aldcliffe and the Marsh estate, where there would be a new roundabout built before the road crosses the River Lune and joins Ovangle Road.
Mr Dickinson said the aim was to show the LBL was a viable route with advantages over the council’s plan and warranted a full assessment.
In response to criticisms and technical objections by the county council and Natural England, he stressed the proposed route was a discussion document as supporters did not have the resources to compete with the council’s professionals.
Link Road Hearings – The Next Week
Thursday, July 12 and Friday, July 13: Hearings on traffic flows and noise assessments.
Tuesday, July 17, Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19: Hearings on arguments for and against the road.
Hearings are at Lancaster Town Hall at 9.30am except the hearings on Wednesday, July 18, which are at Torrisholme Methodist Church, Norwood Drive, Torrisholme, at 2pm and 6.30pm.
