A big well done to the people of Morecambe and Heysham for showing your generosity last October and November as the figure raised by the Poppy Collection was announced.
I received a letter from the Royal British Legion’s Community Fundraiser for Lancashire informing all involved in our town’s collection that the sum raised as at January 27 was £19,373.30 a great achievement considering the financial constraints many people are under here in the North West.
That figure will go up slightly owing to money still to come in but reaching almost £20,000 is a great achievement.
Big thanks should go out to the Cadet groups who collected and of course Morrisons.
The Arndale Centre was able to swell the amount raised but amazingly the shops, pubs and clubs of the town raised over £12,000, wreaths and private donations contributed to the figure – a fantastic effort.
The local branch of the Legion are still on the lookout for someone to take on the role of Poppy Appeal Co-Ordinator for this year.
If there is anyone out there who would like to be considered for the role please email email@example.com
It is now just over a week to go before another fundraising event that people of the local area can get involved in – The Morecambe Poppy Scatter.
More on that next week; but just to let you know, poppy seeds are now being sold in many local businesses including the Arndale Centre and at Bare Pharmacy on Princess Crescent.
I will have informed all Morecambe Licensees at the latest Pubwatch Meeting so eventually we will get complete coverage in the town.
Of course, you can buy them from supermarkets and garden centres but buying from the Poppy Scatter boxes will ensure money is raised for forces charities.
There is a saying that goes, “It’s only funny until someone loses an eye!” The latest trend on social networking sites is the Necknomination – beware anyone nominated.
A 23-year-old student in Dublin has been found dead after a night of partying, which included taking part in a nomination by reportedly “downing” a pint of whiskey. It’s not known if this was the cause but it must have contributed to possible alcoholic poisoning.
I’m not a killjoy and have actually seen some very funny and creative nominations taking place on Facebook – please be careful what you drink.
