It turned out nice for a group of George Formby fans who visited Morecambe’s Winter Gardens theatre. Members of the George Formby Society played their ukeleles on its historic stage to follow in the footsteps of the old-time film star.

Now the gang of Formby followers hope to return for a full fan convention in 2013.

George Formby, one of Britain’s biggest stars of the 1930s and 1940s, performed at the Winter Gardens.

Famed for his cheeky songs such as ‘Leaning on a Lamppost’, Formby also switched on the Morecambe Illuminations in 1950 and judged the Miss Great Britain beauty contest at the Super Swimming Stadium.

He died in 1961.
