Market future is a little brighter
Morecambe's Festival Market
The future of Morecambe’s Festival Market looks a little brighter, despite traders’ fears.
Following a meeting of Lancaster City Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, October 9, the council has vowed to continue to support a market in the resort. Traders had expressed concerns after ten were given notice to quit due to issues with rent arrears.
Cabinet agreed several measures to improve the market in the short-term including improved coach parking, improved marketing of the market and looking at options for insulating and heating.
In the long-term the council says they will look at a range of options of how the market can be sustained.
It is expected that this will include consulting with traders, councillors, Morecambe Town Council, business representatives and shoppers.
“This is a reassuring and positive step forward for Morecambe’s Festival Market,” said Karen Kay, Festival Market trader. “As traders, we’re all committed to providing a market that’s a great place to shop for both local people and day trippers.
“We all have to work together to make it a success.”
