A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fire deliberately in Morecambe.

He was held after a ground-floor kitchen blaze at a three-storey building on Alexandra Road at around 5.30am last Thursday (August 29).

About 16 firefighters in three appliances rushed to the scene after a 999 caller said someone might be trapped.

Crews used rams to break both the front and back doors down to search the property but found everybody was accounted for.

The fire badly damaged two mattresses while smoke caused severe damage to the entire ground floor.

Lancashire Police said the fire service identified the blaze as being started deliberately.

The suspect, from Lancaster, was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

He was released on bail pending further inquiries.
