Lots to do this summer for children with extra needs

Have your say

Well the summer holidays are here and so far so good.

As usual the holidays for us means a visit to the dentist and today we crossed off the dental visit for Tom and, after holding my breath, all is good. I know that a lot of autistic children have difficulties in brushing their teeth due to sensory issues.

We were told by our dentist about fluoride toothpaste that has a mild minty flavour, so we are going to try this out on Tom. It is by Colgate and called Maximum Cavity Protection and apparently the toothpaste is purple.

I also read in the fabulous Aukids Magazine, which is a positive parenting magazine for children with autism, about a double headed toothbrush. The Dr Barman’s Superbrush is available from dentaldirect.co.uk. So this might well be worth researching if it is difficult to brush your child’s teeth.

So with the dentist out of the way we enjoyed the rest of our day. We took Tom to a new vegan cafe in town called Roots. Just so you know, they sell yummy gluten free chocolate cake that contains chickpeas. Tom loved it.

As ever, during the holidays, we need to find things to keep the children entertained. If you have a child with additional needs there is a lot on offer within the area.

AOK, the peer support group for children with additional needs and their siblings, runs weekly sessions every Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm. Sessions take place at either Firbank Children’s Centre or Lune Park. Telephone either centre for more information.

The Zone in Lancaster is also holding sessions for children with additional needs and their families on August 10 and August 24 from 4.30pm to 6pm at £2.50 per child.

Autism Friendly Screenings are also taking place at both Lancaster Vue and Morecambe Reel cinemas. Inside Out is on this Saturday August 1 at Reel and Two by Two is on at Vue on August 30.

We would also be lost this summer without Unique Kidz and Co Holiday Club. If you have a child with additional needs then do check out their website.
