VIDEO: Cows stop pensioners’ post

Waiting for Video...

A right Royal Mail rumpus has broken out after posties stopped delivering to an elderly couple – because of cows.

Sheila and Jeff White have lived in their 19th century cottage in Carnforth for 33 years and never had a problem with their post.

But the Royal Mail has now refused to deliver whenever a herd of cows is in a nearby field.

A letter to the couple claims the cows are a hazard.

Sheila, 77, said: “It’s health and safety gone mad.

“My view is that if you don’t like cows, you shouldn’t be a postman in the first place.”

The postie usually drives up a lane in a field to the Whites’ canalside home, passing through a gate on the way.

But the Royal Mail will no longer deliver if the gate is closed, saying there is no room to turn their van around and cows get in the way.

Jeff, 80, and Sheila have now been told to either put a letter box closer to the main road or collect their mail from the delivery office in Carnforth. They have three months to appeal.

“We’ve both got hip trouble and to ask us to pick up our mail is not on,” said Sheila.

“I don’t understand why the postman can’t park on the nearby housing estate and walk up. It’s not far.

“The cows aren’t dangerous. There are people walking their dogs there all the time.

“There’s also a pedestrian towpath by the side of the canal, nowhere near the cows.”

Val Bodden, spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “We can confirm that we have spoken to the owners to explain that due to health and safety concerns regarding delivery to their address alongside an uneven canal side path and through a field, we have suspended deliveries unless we consider it safe to do so.

“We will also be contacting the owners again to investigate the possibility of an alternative route to reach their property.

“We deliver to almost 29 million addresses so it is always a last resort if we decide not to deliver to a specific address and we will not compromise on the health and safety of our postmen and women.”

Is it safe to deliver post to Mr and Mrs White? Our chief reporter Greg Lambert went to find out.
