Thousands of people from the travelling community have arrived at the site of a huge religious festival in Overton.

The festival run by the Light and Life Gypsy Church is taking place on private land near Overton village from July 26 to 31.

An estimated 800 caravans had parked on the festival site on Friday ahead of the start of the festival tomorrow.

Residents have been worried that the tiny village would not be able to cope with the influx of people and vehicles.

But Danny Maddox, chairman of Overton Parish Council, said on Friday afternoon so far things were going “very smoothly”.

Event organiser Pastor Jackie Boyd, Mr Maddox and representatives of Lancaster City Council and emergency services met on Friday for talks to ensure the event passes off without incident.

The event is being held in a field bordering Lancaster Road, Kevin Grove and Overton St Helens school.
