Royal red letter day for community champs

On May 13 recipients from Lancashire will receive a British Empire Medal.

The BEM rewards an achievement or contribution of a very ‘hands-on’ service to the community in a local geographical area.

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, The Lord Shuttleworth KCVO, will be making the presentations, which were announced in The Queen’s New Year Honours List.

The Investiture will be carried out in the Shire Hall by Lord Shuttleworth, who is Her Majesty’s representative in the County.

Lord Shuttleworth said: “What a record of long and selfless service is demonstrated by the recipients of the BEMs, which I am privileged to present on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.

“All Lancastrians will appreciate what these people have done for our community, and how appropriate it will be to recognise that in the historic setting of Lancaster Castle.”

Among the recipients will be Alan Hague from Morecambe, for services to young people through Scouting in Lancashire.

Mr Hague has dedicated over 50 years of his non-working life to voluntary service to the Scouts and has devoted his time and energy to developing Scouts as individuals through training in teamwork, leadership, self-reliance and skills for use in adulthood.

In 2012, he received the Silver Acorn and Bar to the Silver Acorn in recognition of exceptional good service to Scouting, Voluntary and Charitable Services.

Also to receive her BEM will be Glenys Lord from Morecambe, for services to Higher Education.

Mrs Lord is responsible for Domestic Services operations across all of the University of Cumbria's campuses from Carlisle to the East End of London. She has not only maintained an exemplary attendance record and phenomenal work output, she has also created a loyal, stable team who are recognised for the delivery of a high quality service.
