It was a bug’s life for Elaine Oldfield and Terrie Metcalfe on Children in Need day...quite literally!

The brave pair of Arndale Centre workers ate live witchetty grubs and crickets in their own version of an I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here bushtucker trial.

But cafe owner Elaine and cleaner Terrie showed none of the ‘drama queen’ antics seen on the current series of the ITV reality show by jittery ex-soap star Helen Flanagan.

Instead our tough twosome devoured the creepy crawlies with gusto.

A cringing crowd of shoppers gave them a huge round of applause as they finished the stomach-churning meal outside the Arndale’s Welcome Cafe on Friday lunchtime.

Afterwards Elaine said: “That was quite nice!

“Why did I do it? Because I’m mental.

“It was actually really good fun, even though one of the crickets’ longest legs got stuck in my teeth.”

As for Terrie, a city and town councillor, she was lost for words after her ordeal!

Elaine wore Pudsey Bear-style facepaint and Terrie dressed as a clown during the trial, which raised over £500 for Children in Need.

Elaine thanked everyone who donated, her cafe staff, Steve and Baz the security men from the Arndale, and Jungle Fever for supplying the ‘critters’.
