Enjoy a chat with world-famous author Alexander McCall Smith at Waterstones in King Street, Lancaster, tomorrow, Wednesday February 5, 9.30 to 10.30am.

The bookstore will be serving breakfast of coffee and croissants and giving people the opportunity to meet one of the nation’s favourite authors who is promoting his new book, The Forever Girl.

Smoke alarm warning

A working smoke alarm helped alert residents of a house to a chip pan fire and allowed them time to escape the blaze. Firefighters were called out to the property on Avondale Road in Lancaster at 6.15pm on January 28 to reports of a chip pan fire. On arrival the occupants had made their way out of the property.

The fire occurred due to the chip pan being left unattended whilst still being on a hot ring.Aspokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident shows how valuable a working smoke alarm is in the home as it undoubtedly saved the property from more damage by raising the early alarm. “To receive a free home fire safety check call 0800 169 1125.
