Morecambe weeding task force does a blooming great job

If a job needs doing then we'll do it ourselves. That was the attitude of a group of volunteers who decided to rid our town of unsightly weeds.

Lancashire County Council has cut the budget for weed spraying so unsightly plants have been springing up all over Morecambe.

So Morecambe Bloomers came up with a campaign called ‘Weed Your Street Week’ for residents to tackle the problem first-hand.

Councillor Margaret Pattison and her daughter Charlotte spent several weekends weeding around their home in the Regent Park area of Morecambe. Another West End resident, Malcolm Land, and volunteers from the Exchange Creative Community weeded on West Street, Alexandra Road and neighbouring streets. Mal O’Neill, owner of The Berkeley Hotel singlehandedly weeded from Regent Road along the promenade down to the Battery Hotel. Barry and Betty Atack, residents of Lord Street, weeded from outside their home up to the promenade. And Red Rose Recovery spent a day weeding around The Midland Hotel.

Weed Your Street Week was held in partnership with Morecambe Town Council. Lancaster City Council also supplied weeding equipment.

The town council and the Morecambe Bloomers have urged residents to continue with the weeding. A town council spokesman said: “Even just weeding outside of your home would make a considerable difference and be very much appreciated.”

The county council has blamed the need for weed spraying cuts on ongoing cuts in funding from central government.
