A children’s nursery run by Morecambe’s movie stuntman will close after inspectors called it “inadequate”.
Martin Shenton has complained to Ofsted after a report claimed his Regent Park Studios child care and after-school club was below standard.
Lancashire County Council has now withdrawn a £2,000 per month grant for the kids centre, forcing Mr Shenton to shut his day care service as of October 15. His after school club will remain open.
He said this would result in the loss of seven jobs and 12 children will have to find new child minders.
Mr Shenton, who has starred as a stunt double in films including Les Miserables and Tomorrow Never Dies, slammed Ofsted’s rating as “pathetic and unjustified” and said the report “contradicts itself”.
“We didn’t receive a copy of the inspection report before it was published on line so we didn’t have the usual 28 days to appeal,” he said.
“There is nothing wrong with the standards here. The Government has thrown a new system at us and expected us to hit the ground running. We are now putting these new systems in place.
“These big organisations don’t understand that small companies like us need a fair crack of the whip. Telling staff they’re losing their jobs is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
“The West End of Morecambe is one of the most deprived areas in Lancashire. The majority of children who attend the centre are those in most need.”
The inspection took place after a complaint was made about “unknown people being on duty” at the centre.
The report criticised Regent Park Studios for not fully meeting “specific aspects of welfare requirements” and says “educational programmes are not effective”.
Ofsted said the centre needed to “ensure a regular programme for the supervision of staff is implemented” and “improve the exchange of information between parents and other providers”.
It said “children appear content and interested in their play” and “enjoy playing and interacting with the available resources on offer”.
The nursery closure will not affect other facilities at the Regent Road centre, which include trampoline classes and an indoor zombie maze game.
