A poker player is feeling flush after a big win in Las Vegas.
Gareth Tomlinson from Morecambe was crowned the 2014 Pub Poker Champion in the world’s gambling capital and scooped £5,000.
Now Gareth, who works as a labourer, is planning to use his winnings to pay for a wedding to long-term girlfriend Jennifer.
The 34-year-old beat off competition from 100 players from across the UK to secure the prestigious Redtooth Poker national title.
The father of three, who has been playing the card game for eight years, qualified for the Vegas trip after playing in the Redtooth Poker league at the Trimpell Sports and Social Club.
He won the title at the Orleans Casino during a week-long visit to Vegas.
“It’s been an amazing experience, one of the best days of my life,” said Gareth.
“With poker it’s not over until it’s over, as anything can happen. We were playing for more than 12 hours and it was an emotional roller-coaster ride throughout. But it’s a dream to win.
“We’ve been engaged for a while and the kids have been on at me to marry their mum, so now I’ve won the title we’ve agreed to set a date! I was missing home as I couldn’t get through to the family for the first couple of days in America and it was quite emotional when I did talk to the kids.
“ It was the furthest and longest time I’ve spent away from the family, but winning has made it all worthwhile.
“It’s a huge amount of money to win and I’ll be able to put it to a new car, treat the kids and now for the wedding.”
