A Morecambe lifeboat crew member was shocked to find his bike had been stolen from the hovercraft station while he took part in a drill to help save people’s lives.

Ben Macaskill and colleagues from the RNLI were running through a search and rescue exercise when the thief sneaked in and took Ben’s £1,400 mountain bike from a nearby store room.

Ben, a student at Lancaster and Morecambe College, used to cycle to the station to respond to emergency callouts.

“It was my main method of transport whenever my pager went off with a callout,” said Ben, 17.

“It’s disappointing that somebody has come into a charity building and taken something belonging to one of the crew. I normally have a lot of trust in people. You would have thought they would have had more common sense.”

Ben gives up a lot of his free time to help worthy causes in Morecambe. He also volunteers for Morecambe Bay Foodbank and the Winter Gardens theatre restoration project.

The theft of his green and white Scott bike took place at 8.50pm on Wednesday.
