Lancaster City Council’s mayor, Coun June Ashworth, has called on the district to remember the 23 people who lost their lives in the Morecambe Bay cockling disaster.

“Our thoughts at this sad time are with the families of those who died in this terrible incident and also all others who have lost their lives over the years in Morecambe Bay,” said Coun Ashworth.

“The tragedy was a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the bay and the respect with which it needs to be treated.

“It’s also a time to thank all those who bravely put their own lives at risk in the rescue operation and particularly the unpaid volunteers of the RNLI, an organisation close to my heart.”
