The £11m art-deco inspired flats development that will replace one of Morecambe’s most iconic hotels and create 120 jobs has been unveiled.
The Broadway Hotel on the corner of Broadway and Marine Road East will be demolished and replaced with a futuristic looking apartment block, reminiscent of the Midland Hotel.
The new white rendered building, complete with a roof terrace, balconies, and landscaped areas, will feature 52 retirement properties of varying sizes over seven storeys.
The plans, submitted by McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd, were approved by councillors at a planning meeting at Lancaster Town Hall on Monday.
Coun Paul Woodruff described the development proposal as excellent, but Coun Roger Dennison was less supportive, saying it would “line up” with the Kingsway Baths development and the new medical centre in Heysham.
The plans include a lower ground floor car park with spaces for cycles and mobility scooters, as well as a “pedestrian refuge” for safe crossing to the promenade.
