A shopping street in Morecambe is set to receive an ambitious makeover.

Morecambe Town Team has launched an art project to brighten up Victoria Street and will commission artists to produce stunning artwork on the outside walls of eight specific buildings.

The art could be paintings, mosaics or even metal-based, and on the theme of sunsets, fairgrounds or even our
famous shrimps.

The chairman of the Town Team said she wants the project to give Victoria Street the “wow factor”.

The external walls of the Arndale Centre, the closed-down Victoria Hotel pub, Colin Brown’s hairdressers, the side of the new wool shop in Graham Street, Farrell Heyworth estate agents, the side of Emstrad laptop repair shop and two boarded up windows on St Laurence’s Church are the buildings earmarked for an artistic makeover.

“We want something that will draw people in, we want it to have a wow factor and a theme that will carry on right through the town,” said Christine Stebbing, chairman of Morecambe Town Team.

“We want Victoria Street to become known as the art street.” The co-ordinator of the project is Colin Brown, who runs a barber shop on the street. He said several local artists were already showing interest.

The closing date forartists to put in a bid is Friday, September 19. Please contact
