Lance Corporal Michelle Mackay is home from Afghanistan for two weeks for some rest and relaxation. And Territorial Army volunteer Michelle will be able to pamper herself all the more after winning herself a beauty treatment kit.

Michelle, 37, won a competition run by LZ Boutique in Morecambe, after entering on Facebook while based at Camp Bastion.

“I’m really happy because I like to ‘fake tan’ although people think I’ve got my tan from Afghanistan,” she said.

“But we’ve actually had extremes of weather out there.

At 6am it’s been minus four, then another day it will be 80-90 degrees, and then a few days later we’ll be building a snowman!”

Michelle, who trained with the TA at the Alexandra Barracks on Caton Road in Lancaster, is a supplier in the Royal Logistics Corps at the main British military base in Afghanistan.

She works with an interpreter to communicate with Afghan drivers who deliver containers of kit around ~
Helmand Province.

Ex-Lancaster Girls’ Grammar school pupil Michelle joined the TA quite by accident three years ago, when she visited the barracks on enquiries in her role as a Police Community Support Officer, and has never looked back, being posted to Afghanistan four months ago.

She often finds the days monotonous when she’s 3,500 miles from home, and missed her friends and family, especially over the Christmas
period. But Michelle still loves the work, saying: “You end up in strange situations you’d never be in real life and meet lots of interesting people.”
