Police swooped on a half a million pound cannabis farm in Morecambe town centre.

Up to 1,000 plants were discovered hidden in a former boxing club with thousands of pounds worth of sophisticated hydroponic equipment.

An organised criminal gang is thought to be responsible for the factory on Edward Street.

Officers discovered the cannabis factory set up over five rooms on two floors after raiding the premises on Thursday.

They also found a living area, containing beds and cooking facilities, although nobody was in the building at the time.

The premises was cordoned off until Sunday as a CSI team scoured the building and the plants were removed and destroyed. Passers by could smell a strong stench of marijuana in the air.

Det Sgt Fiona Jackson said: “Offenders were clearly living on the premises to facilitate the feeding and watering of the plants.

“Items at the scene would suggest these offenders were of South East Asian origin.

“The recovery of such a large quantity of drugs has prevented those involved profiting from illegal activity.”

Last May, 40 cannabis plants were found in the former St Laurence’s Church further along Edward Street.

Det Sgt Jackson said police were not ruling out a link between the two factories.

Anyone with information about the cannabis factory can contact police on 101 or call the freephone Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111, where callers can remain anonymous.
