A NEW era began for the Morecambe and Heysham branch of the British Legion on Remembrance Day.

A short ceremony at The Platform saw the inauguration of a new president, Mike Dennison, replacing the retiring Harry Sheppard.

Mr Sheppard, 85, has been president for 12 years following a distinguished war and peace time career in the merchant navy.

The most notable journeys of Harry’s career included two trips to America, four trips on a refrigerated vessel to Argentina where he was left hospitalised for five months, a 1,000-mile journey up the Amazon and sailing as part of the merchant flotilla towards France in 1944, arriving on D-Day.

He was discharged from the navy in 1946 and he holds fond memories of convalescing and rehabilitation at Endmoor Village near Kendal throughout 1947.
