Motorists were furious after changes designed to improve the flow of traffic between Morecambe and Lancaster actually made things worse.

Cars were stuck in jams and drivers complained about increased journey times after Lancashire County Council switched on new traffic lights and opened a new traffic lane at the junction of Owen Road and Morecambe Road.

“It’s ridiculous,” said David Hodgson, a taxi driver from Morecambe.

“It took me 50 minutes to get from Morecambe to Lancaster.”

Another motorist said: “You would hope any work on Lancaster and Morecambe’s already awful traffic system would improve things. This seemed to take it backwards.”

Traffic was moving better on Friday following adjustment work on the signals.

“There is still some additional work to be carried out on the junction, as part of the overall project,” said a spokesman for Lancashire County Council.

“ We are working to finish this as quickly as possible.”
