LANCASTER will play host to the International Youth Games in 2013, city councillors have confirmed.
The games, which are hosted each year by Lancaster and its twin towns, provides opportunities for young people in the district – including those with disabilities for the first time this year – to take part in a variety of sporting and cultural competitions.
Lancaster City Council last year sent a delegation of 32 young people to Almere in the Netherlands but the previous year it withdrew from hosting the games due to a cash shortage.
This year’s event takes place in Aalborg, Denmark, from August 2 to 7, at a cost to the city council of £15,400, with the 2012 games being held in Rendsberg, Germany, at an estimated cost of £5,200.
