Moonlight walkers are going the extra mile for Lancaster St John’s Hospice when they don their 80s outfits for the annual fundraiser.

The 10th annual moonlight walk will take place on Saturday June 11 and is expected to attract a record number of walkers as the hospice celebrate their 30th year.

This year’s walk is rewinding to the 1980s to celebrate the Slyne Road’s milestone of caring. With ages ranging from 12 right up to 80 the event sees friends, families and colleagues from all walks of life donning their vibrant t-shirts, legwarmers and flashing accessories and walking either 14k or 25k in support of the charity.

The 25k walk also takes in parts of Heysham too, before coming back down the promenade and returning to the hospice.

With the walks officially opening at 10pm (25k) and midnight (14k), participants will be entertained before they set off with 80s hits, up tempo warm ups and neon face painting.

Jean Lawrence, who has led the volunteer team, said: “We have been volunteering over eight hours a day for the last two weeks getting all the bags ready.

“We do it because we love to help and because St John’s is close to all our hearts. It is a crazy fortnight but we love it.”

Local businesses have been keen to show their support by donating a variety of prizes. The individual who raises the most money will win a year’s hairdressing at Jo and Cass Salon.

This year, as part of the 80s theme there are four colours of t-shirt across both walks – pink, blue, green and yellow and have been sponsored by Cannon Hygiene and local solicitors JWK.
