A SAND GROWN ‘UN who has lived in Morecambe much of his life has celebrated his 100th birthday.
Joe Cocking, who lives in his own apartment at Homebreeze House in Morecambe, dresses in a suit and tie most mornings, and still gets the bus to get his hair cut or do his shopping with his friend Michelle.
Born in Morecambe, Joe attended Morecambe Central School in Euston Road.
Joe left school aged 14, and worked for a bespoke tailors in Preston, collecting suit lengths to be made up in Lune Street in Lancaster.
He would travel by tram for three halfpennys a return trip. He enlisted in the army in 1939, and afterwards he became company secretary for the Loxham Motor Group in Morecambe and then carried out a similar role with Lakeland Ford.
Joe also worked in the cocktail bar at the Broadway in Morecambe, and recalls getting a name for “barring everybody”.
