Morecambe will receive an early Christmas present this year – an ice rink.

A temporary ice rink will be open on the Winter Gardens car park for two weekends in the run-up to the festive season.

Skaters of all abilities will be welcome to come along and have a go. The rink will be open on November 30, December 1, December 7 and December 8.

It will be funded by government money awarded to Morecambe last year.

The Town Team, the group of businesspeople tasked with spending £100,000 ‘Portas’ cash, will pay the £8,000 cost of bringing in and operating the rink.

The team will also run a Christmas street market on Victoria Street on November 30 and December 1, and hopes to run a Santa parade from the Arndale Centre to the Festival Market on November 30.

The Town Team came under fire in August after it was revealed they had spent hardly any of a £100,000 government grant awarded to the town in 2012. Morecambe was handpicked as one of the government’s flagship ‘Pilot Towns’ in a scheme backed by TV retail guru Mary Portas. Mobile synthetic ice rinks have proven to be a popular attraction in Morecambe in recent years.
