Up to 250 staff, including nurses, could be axed in swingeing cuts proposed by Morecambe Bay’s health trust.
As part of a consultation into staff roles across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust’s (UHMBT) three hospital sites, the trust is proposing to cut five per cent of its 5,000-strong workforce.
Unions have branded any cuts to staff a “disaster” which would have a significant impact on patient care.
The trust said that patient care was its primary concern, and that it would try to re-deploy staff wherever possible.
On Monday, the trust began a 45-day consultation into staff roles, and said it could not rule out job losses.
A former senior staff nurse has said that any cuts to nursing staff would be “absolutely deplorable” given the workload they already have.
