A determined cyclist raised £500 for St John’s Hospice by cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Jameel Malik, 19, cycled his BMX (with no brakes) the 874 miles over two weeks. Sadly, half way along the route, Jameel’s BMX broke and he had no choice but to walk part of his journey.

Amazingly he walked from Dumfries to Lancaster, a staggering 100 miles, where he then tried to buy a replacement part for his bike.

His bad luck continued as he couldn’t find the needed part.

His determination never faltered, so instead of giving up, Jameel used his food money to buy a bike off his friend to finish his challenge.

Having little money spare, Jameel could not afford to stay over in the luxury of a B&B so decided to sleep outdoors in fields and bus shelters along the way.

Anna Scott, community fundraiser told Jameel she was totally in awe of what he had done.

Jameel replied: “I am in awe of what you do here!”.
