Hospice helps people light up lives

Help light up a life with St John's Hospice.

Help light up a life with St John's Hospice.

You may have noticed St John’s Hospice has a particular sparkle at this time of year.

That’s down to the Slyne Road charity’s Light up a Life Appeal, where the hospice illuminates its trees with fairy lights, each one representing the life of someone missed over the festive period.

Hundreds of local families are invited to dedicate a light on their trees in return for a donation to the hospice.

This year’s Light up a Life appeal has so far raised more than £20,000 which will help the hospice continue caring for those with cancer and other life limiting conditions.

Alison Page lost her husband Mick at the hospice earlier this year.

Mick received care in his home from the Hospice at Home team for two months and spent his last two weeks on the hospice ward.

Alison said: “In his last two months we benefited from the unparalleled support provided by St John’s Hospice.

“Their Hospice at Home team visited us at home and gave Mick wonderful, cheerful, gentle personal care and support; and for me they had sympathy,

advice, support and hugs.

“Mick’s last two weeks were spent in the hospice itself, and he could not have received better care anywhere.

“And I continue to benefit from the wonderful support provided by their bereavement counselling team.”

Since losing Mick, Alison has become an active supporter of St John’s taking up The Cross Bay Walk challenge achieving the most sponsorship, raising more than £1,000.

She also chose to make a generous donation towards the Light Up A Life Appeal.

The Light up a Life ceremony took place at Lancaster Cathedral and was attended by families from all over the local area which saw the symbolic trees being lit as a local children’s choir sang Silent Night.

Families were encouraged to hold a candle in memory of their loved one, which were lit by a team of nurses.
