Emergency care services at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital now meet all the essential standards of quality and safety after an inspection by the CQC.

The CQC carried out unannounced inspections at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on August 13 and Furness General Hospital on August 14.

Sir David Henshaw, Chair, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT), said: “Patients have been let down in the past with unacceptable levels of care and this cannot happen again.

“We are very pleased to have received this report two weeks after the CQC said that our maternity services were also meeting all the essential standards they inspected.

“This helps to demonstrate that the Trust as a whole is turning the corner in terms of recovery, not just individual departments.

“However, we do acknowledge there is still a long way to go.

“The positive findings from the CQC are testament of the hard work of our staff, together with local GPs, the public, Governors and stakeholders that continue to work in partnership to ensure services remain safe and of a high standard, not just now, but in the longer term.

“The report from the CQC today is just the beginning for our emergency care services.

“We will continue to press on to ensure the public get the hospital services they rightly demand and deserve.”

Jackie Daniel, Chief Executive, UHMBT, said: “Emergency care services have come a long way since the CQC issued warning notices in February this year, with significant improvements across the board.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their support and also to our staff for their continued dedication

and commitment.”
