Ward manager Lesley Kosturczak from Morecambe has been put forward for the Nurse of the year category in the Your Health Heroes awards.

A nurse at the Royal Lancaster infirmary has received five separate nominations from different colleagues for an award to recognise her outstanding contribution to patient care.

Clinical leader and ward manager Lesley Kosturczak from Morecambe has been put forward for the Nurse of the year category in University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘Your Health Heroes’ awards.

The accolades have been established to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary roles carried out by NHS staff across Morecambe Bay.

With glowing endorsements so far coming from a fellow nurse, a clinical support worker, an SHO, a ward clerk and a registrar, Lesley is now amongst the leading contenders for the awards.

With many qualities attributed to her by peers and colleagues, Lesley has won specific praise for her clinical and nursing skills and her commitment to improving healthcare at the Trust, as well as the ability to relate to patients and to manage staff and resources on ward 6 at RLI.

Locum medical registrar Dr Gias Uddin said: “Lesley is an extraordinary, hardworking and outstanding nurse who manages and delegates effectively.”

The purpose of UHMBT’s ‘Your Health Heroes’ awards is to the recognise the talent and commitment of staff, volunteers, governors and fundraisers across the Trust’s hospitals - Furness General Hospital, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

The Trust is looking for nominations in 13 categories: Innovation award, Doctor of the year, Nurse of the year, Midwife of the year, Team of the year, Special achievement award, Patient safety award, Behind the scenes award, Fundraiser of the year, Volunteer of the year, Registered professional of the year, Student/trainee of the year and the Supporting the organisation award.

Three finalists will be selected for each category and will be invited to the awards ceremony in November.
