A couple who tied the knot asked their guests to make a donation to St John’s Hospice instead of giving them wedding gifts.

Sarah and Kevin Wilde wanted to give something back to the hospice for giving such wonderful care to the people most dear to them.

The couple’s wedding guests raised a fantastic £1,000 which can also be Gift Aided, meaning the hospice can claim a further 25% off the tax man making a whopping £1,250 for St John’s.

Sarah said: “It was my idea because my mum and dad both passed away at the hospice, as well as a dear friend. I can’t say enough about the care they were given, the staff were so attentive to the family as well as the patients.

“Because we had both been married before, it was the most obvious thing to do whatever we can for charity and give a little back.

“The wedding was about being together as a family, not about presents.”

Sarah works at Carnforth High School in the office and husband Kevin is a lecturer at Furness College.

The couple, who live in Crag Bank, have four children between them, Chelsea and Ashton Braithwaite, 24 and 21, and Aaron and Nicole Wilde, 19, and 12.

The children thought it was a lovely idea for their parents to ask for money to be donated to the hospice instead of presents.

Sarah said: “We’ve done the Moonlight Walk twice, both the 25K and the 10K and we plan to do it again. We are very much still involved with the hospice.

“I don’t think people realise how much everything costs at the hospice and they rely on the money donated.

“It doesn’t matter what amount is donated, any little bit helps.

“You don’t know what lies in the future and one day that could be you needing to be cared for in the hospice or in your home. We’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated money to the hospice.”

Jo Humphrey, community fundraiser, said: “Sarah and Kevin’s act of generosity is wonderful to see and we are so pleased they chose to support the hospice. The money they have raised will go directly to helping patients and their families in our local community.
