A top Government minister visited a flourishing Morecambe firm today - just days after Prime Minister David Cameron was in town.
Oliver Letwin MP was at SHP Ltd on White Lund Industrial Estate after asking Morecambe and Lunesdale MP David Morris to show him one of the region’s top businesses.
SHP carries out high-tech recycling of data-bearing devices such as computers and mobile telephones and boasts international clients.
It started out in a garage in 1999 but now operates from a huge warehouse.
Mr Letwin is the Minister for Government Policy and company managing director, Craig Smith, said he was “very grateful” the high-ranking Conservative politican stopped by.
“He was very personable and chatted about the business. It’s great he’s spending time out and about. I’m grateful he’s taken an interest in us.”
Mr Letwin said: “It’s a fantastic business. Like all the best ideas in business it is very straight forward and simple but it’s very ingenious and it’s extraordinarily efficient. It’s about the most complete case of recycling I think I have ever seen of anything.
“The most impressive thing is it all started in that garage, not much more than ten years ago, and now it’s a major business turning over £4m a year and making a healthy profit, with significant exports. It’s a real example of what we can do in Britain.”
David Morris added: “It’s a niche business and demonstrates how Morecambe and surrounding areas in the business community is changing.
“SHP is right next to the new road and is a success story, built out of seeing a direction to go in before everybody else and it demonstrates how the community in Morecambe are. We’re very resilient, and with the new regeneration prospects with the new power station on its way in the next ten years, Morecambe is open for business.”
On Friday, Mr Morris welcomed David Cameron to international furniture transporters, F. Edmondson & Sons, also at White Lund.
The Prime Minister’s visit marked the official go-ahead of the M6 link road and he chatted to businesses about the effect the infrastructure will have on them.
